Aside from listening to guitar players I do enjoy listening to other types of instrumentalists as well. In fact, I sometimes prefer listening to non-guitar playing musicians since they can do things on their instruments that I cannot do on mine! For example, piano players have ten available fingers and can play much denser chord voicings than I can on the guitar. However, by listening to piano players or horn players it allows me to try to think of ways I can apply pianistic or hornlike phrasing to my instrument.
Some of my favorite piano players are Bill Evans, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Red Garland, Cyrus Chestnut and Danilo Perez. I am always working on trying to transfer over what these guys are doing on piano to the guitar!
As far as horn players are concerned I enjoy listening to Louis Armstrong (trumpet), JJ Johnson (trombone), Art Farmer (Flugelhorn), Dexter Gorden (Tenor Saxophone), and Coleman Hawkins (Tenor Saxophone). These are a few (but certainly not a complete) list of the non-guitar playing musicians that I am influenced by. Who are some of yours? Leave a reply!
Hi Joe:
Great blog!
And a great list!
As for favorite musicians, aside from you and Jeffrey Moore (never miss an appearance by either of you on Jordan’s show if I can help it!), some of my favorite “also ran” musicians would include Erroll Garner, Nat Cole, Lester Young, Georgie Auld, Artie Shaw, Stephan Grapelli, Joe Venuti,Bix Beiderbecke, Chet Baker John Pizzarelli, Hazel Scott, Alicia de La Rocha, Vladimir Horowitz, Isaac Stern, etc. Oh heck, the list is endless!
Congratulations on the new blog! Looking forward to more of your comments.
